The cost of solar commercial solar panels is also dropping making it an easy and also efficient way of generating electricity. Another problem with solar power is that it isn't baseload-and, like wind power we are reliant at what the weather throws at us. One solution to this is for solar panels to be connected up to batteries that store energy for us to use even when the sun's not shining. Another is to build a solar farm out in space, where there are never any clouds to block out the sun. The space plant would orbit our planet and beam down electricity to a power station which could then power our towns and cities. Scientists from the Japanese Shimizu Corporation also aim to install a small solar plant on the moon in the next 10 years. They are planning to place a 400 km wide ring of solar panels around the moon's equator and beam the energy back to earth. According to recent predictions, this could generate over 13 million terawatts. That's over 12 million times what all electrical installations in the US consume!
